The current buzzword in the mobile phone market is, what else, “Android”. And just in case you have been living in Mars in recent times, Android is not a phone; it’s an operating system, the software base of your handset, much like what Windows XP is to your computer. So before you head out to the shops to pick up the it-phone of the day, make sure you know a little more about the various operating systems you can choose from.
“An operating system is what determines what features your phone will have, and what it will cost,” says Nikhil Pahwa, editor of Medinama.com, a tech and IT industry e-publication. “It is what determines, for example, whether the phone is a touch screen or keypad based, or what kind of apps it can run. A more advanced operating system will allow more features, which will in turn determine how much the phone will cost.”
The three most widely available mobile phone platforms for touch screen smart phones in India right now are Apple’s iOS which runs on the iPhone and iPad, Google’s Android, and Microsoft’s Windows Phone line. Unlike the iOS, which is only found on Apple’s iPhone, the Android OS can be found on a variety of phones, including Samsung, HTC, Dell, and even the Delhi-based Micromax.
Worldwide, Androids have become the fastest selling phones today. So much so that London-based industry watcher Informa Telecoms and Media have predicted in a report that Android phone sales will soon outstrip that of iPhone, despite the Android platform coming out a year and a half after iPhone.
Local dealers too stress that the Android is outselling Apple’s phone. “People in India certainly want iPhones, but things get here very late. The iPhone version 4 is already out in other parts of the world, but who knows when it will come to India? As far as I know, Android is outselling the iPhone,” says Sanjay Dixit, owner of Nikkys, an electronics shop in Calcutta.
The success of Android is primarily because of the number of phones it is available on, and the wide price range. “An Android phone price can range from Rs 7,000 (Micromax) to Rs 33,000 (Dell Streak),” says Gautam Arora, director of DP Electronics, a mobile retail store in Calcutta. “However, most of the phones fall in the Rs 15,000 to Rs 28,000 price range.” The iPhone 3GS, on the other hand, sells for a hefty Rs 37,000.
Currently, there are six mobile phone manufacturers that make Android-based phones Dell latitude e6400 battery Acer as07b42 battery in India. Out of these, it’s Samsung that that seems to have become the most popular. “Samsung has the widest range of Android phones available,” says Dixit. “You can get a Samsung Android for as low as Rs 9,000, which would be the Galaxy Pop, to Rs 28,000 for the SamsungGalaxy.”
Other Android manufacturers are HTC, Dell, Song, and LG. HTC too has a very wide range of Android phones. They are slightly higher priced, though, with the cheapest, the Wildfire, going for Rs 13,900.
Computer manufacturer Dell has also got into the cell phone manufacturing business, coming out with three Android models: the Streak, XCD, and Venue.
What makes the Android platform so appealing, says Arora of D.P. Electronics is its flexibility. The problem with the iOS is that all apps can only be bought through Apple’s online store.

For the Android though, there is a large online community that is constantly developing new apps. Moreover, they are not limited to a particular website, nor do they need Google’s consent to be published.
“Ninety-five per cent of the apps on Android are free. Plus, I can go online and ask developers to customise apps to suit my needs. Apple’s iOS, however, is too restrictive. All apps have to be picked up through their store, and you have to pay for all the useful ones,” says Arora.
As far as cell phone manufacturers go, they see the Android as a way to make a phone as glitzy as the iPhone. Samsung says that the company prefers to market its Android phones as a lifestyle product. “We see consumers of today relate to their mobiles as communication hubs. So as content becomes a key driver for mobility, Internet accessibility has become an integral part of urban lifestyle,” says Ranjit Yadav, the country head of mobile and IT for Samsung.
But despite the drawbacks, you can’t really write off the iOS. In fact, Tushar Kunwar , a Delhi-based dell vostro 1500 battery sony Vgp-bps2c battery technology expert, says that the Android does have one flaw that Apple’s product doesn’t — good quality control.
“For all the flak that Apple gets for its ‘closed’ iOS system, at the end of the day, you know you will get a quality app, with no malware or trackers. Any app that gets on the online store has been thoroughly scrutinised. With the Android though, there is a chance you could end up with malicious software.”
Ease of use is another plus point of iOS, says Arun Nath, director of Anything Mac Pvt. Ltd., an Apple store in Delhi. “Android phones are for the tech savvy. Consumers today are very discerning. They don’t want something that bogs them down with figuring out how it works. They want their gadget to do what they want on the go.”
Today, with the Android and Apples iOS slugging it out, Microsoft, which for years had the Windows Phone platform, has been mostly marginalised.
But in an effort to get back in the game with iOS and Android, Microsoft has developed the new Windows Phone 7. Its plus point is that it allows a user to sync his phone with his Outlook email account.
But very few manufacturers hp 530 battery are sticking with Windows now, says Arora. “HTC, which was the only major manufacturer still creating Windows-based phones, has now shifted to making Android phones.”
So go ahead and buy that cutting edge smart phone. But weigh the pros and cons of the various operating systems and then make your choice.
