New report - Nokia may outsource Windows Phone manufacturing

A new report suggests a very out-of-the-ordinary move for Nokia.

Respected industry trade publication Digitimes has it on good authority that Nokia has entered into a licensing deal with a company called Compal Communications.

That means Compal will have the ability to create and manufacture phones bearing the Nokia logo and using Microsoft's Windows Phone software.

That move would seem to be at odds with Nokia's long heralded tradition of being its own proprietary manufacturer. Part of what made Nokia such a strong company for so long was that it was able to achieve economies of scale by doing all of that work internally, and because it developed some of the world's most unique and ergonomic devices on the market.

Giving the keys to some other company to do that is a peculiar decision. However, with Nokia, all cards are on the table at this point. Just a few short years ago, the mere idea of the company using someone else's operating system would have seemed laughable. Nokia's Symbian platform was not only the operating system for virtually every Nokia phone, but it was also licensed out to other phone manufacturers. Nokia was both a hardware and software company.

But it just hasn't been able to keep up with Android and the iPhone, and it has fallen down from its position as the #1 mobile phone manufacturer in the world - a position that seemed almost unlosable before the advent of Android.

So anything is possible, and Nokia surely wants as many advantages as it can have, so opening up licensing to another company may help breathe new life as it begins a new chapter in its corporate history.

Mozilla launched new Firefox browser for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android

Mozilla has launched a new version of its flagship Firefox browser for Windows, Mac, Linux and Android.

The latest iteration of the popular browser arrives just months after the official release of Firefox 4 in March 2011, which racked up an impressive 200 million downloads.

Mozilla rolls out Firefox 5

So, whats's new in Firefox 5?

Well, the browser offers more than 1,000 improvements and performance enhancements, along with support for more "modern" Web technologies.

For example, Firefox for Windows, Mac and Linux now support the CSS Animations standard - which is used by developers to build next-gen web apps and sites.

In addition, the new Firefox add-on SDK enables local development of add-ons, while the Builder Beta provides a convenient hosted Web-based build environment.

Developers can also code Firefox Add-ons for all platforms that install and update - without requiring a browser restart.

Finally, Mozilla has equipped FF for Android with a "Do Not Track" privacy feature, making Firefox the first browser to support such an option on multiple platforms.

As you may recall, Mozilla created Do Not Track to provide users with more control over the way their browsing behavior is tracked and used on the Web.

The feature, which lets users tell websites that they wish to opt-out of online behavioral tracking, is now easier to find in Firefox Preferences across all versions of the browser.

Firefox 5 for Windows, Mac and Linux can be downloaded here, and for Android here.

Review - Google Will Live Feed Lunar Eclipse

Google will offer several ways to watch today's total lunar eclipse live over the Internet

Google Will Live Feed Lunar Eclipse

Not one to let the earth's rotation get in the way of a good lunar eclipse, Google will offer several ways to watch today's total lunar eclipse live over the Internet.

The earth will shield the sun's rays from the moon starting at 11:20 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday. The total lunar eclipse will be visible from Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and South America, meaning that folks in North America won't get to see the eclipse first-hand -- including Google. The search giant is partnering with Slooh Space Camera to help everyone catch a glimpse.

Google Will Live Feed Lunar Eclipse

Click to zoom. The simplest way to watch the eclipse is to visit YouTube's Google channel, which will host a live feed later today. For a more elaborate set-up, check out Slooh's mission interface powered by Google Apps. It allows you to see images of the eclipse from multiple angles and listen to audio narrations, and Slooh members will be able to take high-resolution screenshots. Android phone owners can download Slooh's Space Camera app, which offers a similar experience to the desktop mission interface.

Google has used the moon to showcase the company's service before. In 2009, Google added a complete map of the moon to Google Earth, and last year Google Earth hosted live camera images from Slooh during another total lunar eclipse. This is the first time an Android app has been available for the occasion, and it will also be the first eclipse live feed on YouTube.

But Google's fascination with space isn't always tied to a specific product. In 2007, the company pledged $30 million to anyone who could land a private spacecraft on the moon. The prize remains unclaimed.

Why Facebook's Facial Recognition is Creepy

facebook facial recognitionI'm not sure if you've heard the news, but Facebook is officially getting super-creepy. Facebook announced Tuesday that it will be implementing facial recognition technology for all users in the next few weeks, semi-automating the photo-tagging process.

facebook facial recognition

Sure, you can "opt-out" of the service, but it's a pretty weak consolation. After all, opting out won't keep Facebook from gathering data and recognizing your face--it'll just keep people from tagging you automatically.

facebook and Sarah Jacobsson PurewalThe new facial recognition technology, which was announced in December but only introduced to a small test group, is basically Facebook's way of creating a huge, photo-searchable database of its users. And yes, it's terrifying.

(See Related: Facebook Facial Recognition: Its Quiet Rise and Dangerous Future)

Basically, Facebook is using facial recognition technology to "suggest" tags to users who upload photos. In other words, if I upload six photos Dell vostro 1310 battery Dell vostro 1510 battery of my friend Kaitlin, Facebook may "recognize" her face (thanks to other tagged photos of her on the website) and "suggest" that I tag her in those six photos. This makes the tagging process a little easier for me--after all, aren't I more likely to tag Kaitlin if all I have to do is click a button that says "yes, tag away"? Another "benefit" is that I can tag all of these photos of Kaitlin at once--as Facebook said in a blog post, isn't it a whole lot better to be able to tag all of those photos of Kaitlin at once, instead of having to tag each one individually?

facebook and Sarah Jacobsson Purewal

Sure, I guess it's easier. Easier for Facebook to invade my privacy, that is.
Ok, I know I sound a little melodramatic. But let's take a look at some facts here:
- Facebook has 600 million members.

- Each day, Facebook's members upload over 200 million photos, and Facebook currently hosts over 90 billion photos.

- Each time you "tag" a photo on Facebook, its facial recognition technology learns more about what that person looks like.

- Even if you happen to "opt out" of the facial recognition tagging, Facebook's technology can surely use the tagged photos of you (hey, perhaps even the tagged photos of you that you end up un-tagging) to figure out what you look like.

- Right now Facebook is using this technology to help people tag photos. But once they have an accurate facial recognition database of several hundred million people? Hmm.

facial recognition and facebook At the end of the day, Facebook's facial recognition technology hp 484170-001 battery is downright creepy. Opting out of the service doesn't mean Facebook will stop trying to recognize your face--it just means that Facebook will stop suggesting that other people tag you. Even Google has noted the utter creepiness of facial recognition technology (though I suspect they're just waiting for Facebook to get burned).

Facial recognition technology will ultimately culminate in the ability to search for people using just a picture. And that will be the end of privacy as we know it--imagine, a world in which someone can simply take a photo of you on the street, in a crowd, or with a telephoto lens, and discover everything about you on the internet.

facial recognition and facebook

Obviously, we can't stop the world of technology from moving toward the development of accurate facial recognition software. But so far, no facial recognition software has really been a threat to our privacy, because nobody has that huge database of people and photos required. Oh wait, except Facebook totally does.

Yeah. So not only should you opt out of Facebook's facial recognition technology by going to Account > Account Settings > Privacy > Customize Settings > Things Others Share and disabling "Suggest photos of me to friends," you should also upload random pictures of trees and animals and stuffed toys and tag them as yourself.

E3 2011: Microsoft Reveals Halo 4, Bets Farm on Kinect Experience

How Not to Do Twitter: The Rise and Fall of My Twitterverse

I came a little late to the Twitter party. Once I embraced the basic concept, I set out to build a massive Twitter following--in all the wrong ways, and for all the wrong reasons. If you are new to Twitter, or trying to gain Twitter followers, perhaps you can learn from my mistakes.

The Wrong Way to Do Twitter

There is no point in tweeting in a vacuum. If you don't have Twitter followers, you are essentially only tweeting to yourself. I had grand visions of being an Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk - currently 6,891,674 followers), or a Pete Cashmore (@mashable - currently 2,336,322 followers), or a David Pogue (@pogue - currently 1,351,572 followers), or even a Robert Scoble (@scobleizer - currently 183,534 followers).
Twitter - follow meYou need to attract Twitter followers or you'll just be tweeting to yourself.I did some Google searches and asked around about building a Twitter following. Apparently, I fell in with the wrong crowd and got the wrong advice. Basically, the direction I got was to follow as many other Twitter accounts as I possibly could, and then those Twitter tweeps would reciprocate and follow me back. The problem with this strategy is that it raises your Twitter following number, but doesn't attract any actual Twitter followers.

Twitter - follow me

More other business news:Dell studio 1555 battery , dell d630 battery

You can't buy love...or Twitter followers. The only Twitter followers you get following the "follow and they'll follow you back" strategy are other Twitter users following that same strategy. The net result was that I was quickly approaching 20,000 Twitter followers, but the vast majority of them were never really interested in reading my tweets or contributing to any meaningful dialog. In the end, I was still basically tweeting in a vacuum--just a much larger vacuum.

Scorched Earth Do-Over

At some point, it occurred to me that I wasn't really interested in reading the tweets of the vast majority of the 15,000 or so Twitter accounts I was following, and there were so many tweets coming through that I couldn't get any value out of Twitter at all. I had no idea who these people were, or whether we had anything in common. Then it hit me--if I don't care about reading their tweets, they probably don't care about reading mine either.

So, I went back and did some further research on my Twitter "idols". Ashton Kutcher only follows 637 Twitter accounts. Pete Cashmore follows 2,260, and David Pogue follows 1,631. Robert Scoble follows an insane 31,758--but it is still only one sixth of the number that are following him, and I am willing to bet he uses a variety of lists and filters and really only reads the tweets of a few hundred Twitter accounts.

I took a "scorched Earth" approach to rectifying the situation. I unfollowed everyone. Literally. All 15,000 plus Twitter accounts I was following--gone. I'm sorry to those I unfollowed. It was nothing personal. It's not you, it's me.

Then, I started anew by following all of the accounts from the Techies: 2011 Directory of Who to Follow On Twitter list by Jason Hiner at TechRepublic. I have since expanded the list with additional Twitter accounts I am interested in that aren't on Hiner's list, but my 15,000-plus list has been whittled down to a much more manageable 200. I do still use a couple lists in Tweetdeck to filter specific Twitter accounts that I want to follow more closely, but the traffic on my primary feed is now a reasonable pace that I can keep up with.

The Fallout

The first thing I found when I unfollowed everyone is that the same people who use the "follow me and I'll follow you back" strategy seem to be the same people who use those services that monitor who unfollowed them and then blast it out to all of Twitter--as if the public shame is supposed to make me want to re-connect with them or something.

Frankly, a tweet that says "@thetonybradley and five other Twitter accounts unfollowed me today" says more about the one being unfollowed than it does about the ones doing the unfollowing. Perhaps those people should spend more time giving people a reason to want to follow them, and less time trying to embarrass them publicly.

Twitter - please stay

More other business news: hp 484170-001 battery

Unfollowing others has sparked a mass exodus of users unfollowing my Twitter account.Since I did my scorched Earth unfollowing, my Twitter following has been steadily declining. From its high somewhere north of 19,000, it has now dwindled to somewhere less than 16,800. It continues to drop with each passing day, albeit slowly.

The Right Way to Do Twitter

Building a Twitter following--a real Twitter following--is like building relationships in real life. The strategy I employed was akin to buying friends. You can get a lot of people to show up and be your buddy if you're giving away free ice cream, but how many of those people will be there to bail you out of county jail at 3am on a Saturday night after a bar fight?

The lesson in all of this is to be genuine. When you're insincere, you attract insincerity. My new goal is to simply be me, provide as much value as I can, and to be comfortable with whatever Twitter following that attracts--whether it's 100,000 or 1,000...or 10.

I don't know where the bottom is on the fall of my Twitter following. Wherever it is, though, the Twitter followers who remain will be quality Twitter followers that matter--Twitter followers who are actually interested in hearing what I have to say, sharing my thoughts with others, and engaging in debate and discussion.

I won't ever have the following of an Ashton Kutcher. I may not ever have the following of a Robert Scoble.

The Secret of Hp You Need to Know - HP's Massive Battery Recall

HP's Massive Battery Recall: What You Need to Know

Where to look for your HP battery's bar code on your laptop.Hewlett-Packard has recalled about 162,000 lithium-ion batteries used in its HP and Compaq laptop computers. The announcement, made late last week by HP and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), adds additional battery packs to a recall program announced just a week earlier.

Here's a brief FAQ:

What's wrong with the batteries?
The recalled lithium-ion packs can overheat and rupture. They pose fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Have people been hurt?
Yes. Since May 2010, HP has received 40 additional reports of laptop batteries that overheated and ruptured. These incidents resulted in 7 burn injuries, one smoke inhalation injury, and 36 cases of property damage.

Which laptops are affected?
Certain battery packs shipped worldwide in HP laptops manufactured between July 2007 and May 2008. HP earlier recalled 54,000 defective batteries in May 2010, and 70,000 in May 2009. Just five percent of HP laptops included in the recall program contain defective batteries.

The CPSC site has a chart that lists all laptop model numbers and battery bar codes associated with the recall to date.

My laptop is on the list. What should I do?
Remove the battery from your computer and contact HP. The company's validation process at its Notebook PC Battery Pack Replacement Program website will help you determine if your product is affected.

I checked my battery during one of HP's earlier recalls, and it wasn't on the list. Everything's OK, right?
Not necessarily. Even if your battery wasn't included in previous announcements, HP urges you to check again.

Looks like I have a defective battery. What's HP going to do about it?
It'll provide a free replacement battery pack.

I want to contact HP about this recall. How can I reach them?
Go to the HP Battery Replacement Program website at www.hp.com/support/BatteryReplacement or phone 888-202-4320 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. CT Monday through Friday.

Can I use my laptop without a battery?
Yes. Once you've removed the defective pack, use the AC adapter to power your laptop until a replacement battery arrives.

Top new 10 best Android games and apps you ought to know

Missed out on the all the great Android apps released in April? Don’t fret. We picked ten of very best - from top-notch RPGs to guides to cooking delicious meals in a fraction of the time it took us to put this list together. You're welcome.

1. Eternal Legacy

Eternal Legacy Android

Eternal Legacy, developed by none other than Gameloft, is a role-playing game inspired by some of the biggest Japanese RPGs out there.

Not only is it one of the best-looking games we’ve seen yet on the platform, it’s actually fun to play, too.
You’re play as Astrian, a rugged rebel hero whose homeland, Algoad, is being threatened by a corrupt leader and other dark forces. It’s up to you to find a way to stop them.

As you set out on your quest, you’ll explore the vast landscapes and visit towns scattered all over Algoad, where you’ll encounter many interesting characters and potential comrades to join your cause, including the daughter of the antagonist, who you must convince of your resolve.

The gameplay is turn-based like most JRPGs, which works out rather well here given the control limitations of touchscreen-only phones.

The visuals, as we’ve already said are stunning. The environments are lush, diverse and in glorious 3D, complemented by the gorgeously rendered animations and in-game cutscenes, plus full voice acting that make for an all round visceral and immersive gameplay experience.

If you love RPGs, do yourself a favour and pick this up right away.

2. Robot Unicorn Attack

Robot Unicorn Attack Android

Originally released as a Flash game and later on the iPhone, Adult Swim’s Robot Unicorn Attack is arguably one of the best, most fun and most bizarre endurance platformers we’ve played.

While not the first nor last entrant in an increasingly crowded genre, what makes Robot Unicorn Attack miles ahead of its peers is its unique and positively striking visuals.

Fire up this baby and prepare to have your senses to thoroughly battered with all things pink, purple and rainbow-hued - all soundtracked by by British synthpop duo Erasure’s haunting ballad ‘Always’ playing on a loop.

Suffice to say, it takes a real man to play this game in public and having played it non-stop since it released, we couldn’t feel more macho if we tried.

The objective is simple: help a unicorn - which is really a robot (because unicorns aren’t real, silly) - travel as far as possible in the game without falling off. There are two buttons to push: one to jump and one to dash forward in a trail of rainbow.

A quick reflex is crucial as failing to land on a platform or running into ‘stars’ without dashing will result in death. The further you get, the more points you score, in the form of pixie dust, obviously.
If you’re looking for something distinct to brighten up your day, you really need not look further. Honestly, give it a try and thank us later.

3. Hot Springs Story

Hot Springs Story Android

Hot Springs Story is the hotly awaited successor to critically and commercial acclaimed simulation Game Dev Story, which we also featured in our top 10 roundup of best Android games and apps released in 2010.
Although an almost identical game in many respects, this time around, instead of taking the reigns in game development studio, you’re put in charge of an up-and-coming Japanese springs inn.

Your job is to develop and transform said inn into a top-class resort, with rooms, restaurants, arcades and baths – and position each facility in the optimum way possible to maximise your business.

You’ll also craft the ultimate Japanese garden from lanterns, pine trees and azaleas to lure in countless punters looking to get away from their hectic lifestyles.

The gameplay is relentless so you’ll need to constantly stay on top of things, from your staff to maintenance of the facilities to ensure everything is running like clockwork.

Do your job well and you’ll soon propel your establishment to fame, attracting VIP guests such as pop stars and best-selling novelists with megabucks to spend.

The controls are intuitive and simple. Turn your device to rotate the screen, swipe to scroll and pinch to zoom in and out – that easy!

If you enjoyed Game Dev Story or love simulation titles in general, you’ll be right at home here.

4. SoundCloud

SoundCloud Android

SoundCloud is the official app from the popular audio distribution platform of the same name that allows you to record, listen to and share all your sounds even while you’re on the road or away from the computer.
You can log-in as a member to record and upload your sounds, which could be a piece of music, an interview or a podcast – just about anything – or share privately with your friends via Twitter, Facebook, or even as a check-in on Foursquare.

Of course, you can also search, browse and listen to files uploaded by others in the SoundCloud community, view their user profiles and comment on sounds shared to you in the dashboard.

Whether you’re a professional musician or simply looking for something to listen to, the SoundCloud app lets you do it all right from your Android.

5. Google Docs

Google Docs Android app

Are you the work-happy type who’s always on the move but who laments the lack of a decent document-editing suite on Android? Then chin up, because your prayers have been answered.

Google Docs, which should be a familiar name to most Google aficionados, is Big G’s popular web-based document editing and storage platform, now with its very own app, bringing all the great functions of the service to your pocket.

Like just on the desktop, the Android app allows you to create, edit, upload and share all your important documents over the web with ease. The interface has been specifically designed to save time finding and browsing your docs, PDFs and images, and to make editing them as breezy as it is on the big screen with handy options to ‘star’ your favourite docs for quick access and make them appear to other collaborators in seconds.

You can also make instant changes to spreadsheets, which load faster and are much, much easier to scroll through. Of course, you can upload files store on the device in Google Docs format, and download those already uploaded.

Better yet, if you’re tired of typing, you can simply take a picture of a printed text and the app will automatically convert it to a Google document. Nifty, huh?
It’s free too, which makes it a no-brainer really.

6. PewPew 2

PewPew 2 Android

PewPew 2 actually came out in March, but we felt it got kinda lost in the shuffle amidst the major malware scare that sucked up all the headlines that month.

Just in case you never played or heard of the original PewPew, it’s an awesome little multi-directional shooter (think: Geometry Wars on Xbox Live) where you assume control of a small spacecraft with the simple goal of destroying everything else on the screen without being hit or destroyed yourself.

Where PewPew stands out from other cloneware is that the enemies and other hazardous objects in its levels come in different colours and can only be eliminated by firing ammo of their matching colour, which adds to a new layer of challenge to the fast-paced gameplay.

Essentially, instead of going Rambo on everything, you have to make use of colour-coded pads spread around the level to instantly change the colour your ammo and then shred through anything and everything matching that colour.

However, that’s easier said than done when you have to manouvre around multiple enemies and colliding with each can be fatal. Fortunately, your ship is equipped with a force shield which can be turned on fleetingly to help you get out of a tight spot.

There are two main modes: a campaign mode with three levels of difficulty and boss fights and an ‘Infinity’ mode which contains seven mini-modes, involving different challenge and a reward of bronze, silver and gold coins based on your performance, along with five unlockable ships.

The Infinity mode also contains online leaderboards and perhaps the coolest feature of the game- the ability to tap on a player’s name on the leaderboard to see an actual replay of their game. This is especially helpful if you’re struggling with that mode or looking for a strategy to achieve an even higher score.

The graphics are entirely in neon to give the game an '80s appearance. The gameplay is simple but super addictive. If you love the shoot ‘em genre, you’d be foolish not to pick this up.

7. Stellar Escape

Stellar Escape Android

If you’re not particularly fond of unicorns, but love endurance runners in general, then Orange Agenda’s Stellar Escape might be just what you need.

With high production values, this is not just another Canabalt clone. It has an actual story with a beginning and an end, as well as an endless mode with two difficulties.

You play as Elliot Black, a courier aboard a space station in a dystopian future who has made the unfortunate mistake of delivering something that you shouldn’t have (spam, we think). Now you’re forced to flee for your life and your goal is simple: to escape the station and scoot off to safety in your ship.

There are 15 levels in the campaign mode, spanning five environments, each with a different degree and variety of challenge.

The gameplay is fast-paced and controls are as intuitive as they come as you jump, roll, climb and dive through obstacles like a trooper even with laser beams are being fired at you.
The graphics are outstanding and are made all the more immersive by the excellent soundtrack and great level designs.

There’s even OpenFeint support for online leaderboards and achievements to unlock, so there’s plenty of reasons to keep playing even after you’re completed the story. If you like this type of game, you won’t go wrong with this.

8. Cyberlords - Arcology

Cyberlords - Arcology

Cyberlords - Arcology is a science fiction RPG set in the distant, distant future.

The year is 2173. The world is controlled by ruthless mega-corporations and governments exist in name alone. Humans live on a giant megacity-like structure with a high population density and declining living conditions. Ordinary denizens have superhuman abilities, granted by readily available nano implants, courtesy of said mega-corporations.

You play as four such humans, Jesse, Hank, Diana and Jade, who are freedom fighters in a group called Thor trying to overthrow these evil organisations and thwart their dastardly plan to implant everyone with mind control devices. Doesn’t get more evil than that, right?

You start off as a lone mercenary, eventually meeting up with members of Thor where you decide join their cause. Gameplay is a mixture of exploration and obliterating anything that gets in your way. Movement is simply a matter of tapping where you want your party to go. When you encounter an enemy, simply tap on it and watch the beating unfold.

Ammo is limited so keeping an eye out for more is crucial. You can also collect credit, which can be spent at terminals to upgrade your weapons, equipment and implants to even powerful ones for boss battles that lie ahead.

The plot is nothing to write home about. However, the game looks incredible and as far as the fun factor is concerned, it delivers in spades. For less than a quid, it’s well worth every penny.

And if you’re still not sure, there’s a free version too, so you can give it a try before you buy.

9. SwitchPro Widget

SwitchPro Widget Android

SwitchPro Widget is a simple, easy to use and supremely elegant little widget that allows you to toggle on and off just about every essential setting on your Android right from the home screen.
