Battery Review: Battery life for notebooks could get much better this year

PC laptop manufacturers have wrestled with the issue surrounding battery life for years, not least of which because business users keep talking about how productivity can be hampered when the juice runs out. But some new models coming out this year may finally make “all-day” battery life a reality.
Lenovo was the first to unveil one of these with the ThinkPad T420, an ultra-thin notebook weighing under four pounds. The company announced that it could stay on for up to 30 hours on one charge, provided the user had the extended battery, which is larger than the standard one. The standard one is a 9-cell battery that can go for up to 15 hours, while the extended one adds another nine cells to double the power.
Meanwhile, HP unveiled its EliteBook 8460p, which can go as high as 32 hours when you get the optional high-capacity battery dv6000 dv5 . And it can stay on that long, despite a next-generation Intel Core processor and 14-inch HD display.
All that said, battery life numbers have always been inflated because they aren’t based on real usability tests, other than just turning the machine on and letting it function without so much as an app open. Battery research is focusing heavily on lithium chemistries, so much so that one could presume that all portable devices will be powered with lithium-ion batteries in the future. In many ways, lithium-ion is superior to nickel and lead-based chemistries and the applications for lithium-ion batteries are growing as a result.

iPad Reviews: Motorola Xoom likely to be a strong rival to Apple iPad

If there’s any tablet this year that can wrest significant market share from the blazing-hot Apple iPad, it will be the Motorola Xoom, an impossibly beautiful and exciting piece of hardware.



Motorola has stuffed a super-fast dual-core 1GHz processor, a super-vibrant 10.1-inch widescreen display, front- and rear-facing cameras and 32GB of internal storage into a svelte, 1.6-pound package.



The Xoom began shipping Thursday with a whopping retail price of $800 at Best Buy or $600 from Verizon Wireless with a two-year data contract. Monthly data rates from Verizon start at $20 a month for 1GB of data.

First Android 3.0 tablet

The Xoom is the first tablet to run on Google’s all-new Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) operating system.



Honeycomb immerses users in the tablet experience without all the reminders of previous Android tablets that it was just phone software on a larger screen.



The home screen is divided into five panels, each with plenty of room for Honeycomb’s powerful widgets.



The widgets — for things like Gmail, Web bookmarks, YouTube videos and calendar events — all display useful information on the home screen.

New Nine-Cell Battery Laptops Offer All-Day Power To Computing

All-day batteries have been claimed for over a year but new 30-hour laptops are truly fulfilling this dream .

Lenovo, Sony, Dell and HP are kicking off a power-play with claims of between 10 and 32 hours of battery life in a clutch of laptop releases. Although the life expectancy covers quite a range, it seems the workday battery-operated notebook is now a reality.



One enabler of the long battery life is the introduction of Intel’s Sandy Bridge family of processors with integral graphics capabilities, or 2^nd Generation Core processors as they are now known, but better power management and innovative battery arrays also play their part.

The battle of the nine-packs

Lenovo has released two ThinkPad notebooks that offer long battery life. The T420s has a native battery life of around seven hours but a second battery can be used to extend this to over 10 hours. The downside is that the cheap laptop batteries replaces the optical disc drive so DVDs and CDs cannot be accessed.



Its more powerful sibling, the T420, has greater lasting power through its nine-cell battery, compared with the 420s six-cell. This offers a battery life of 15 hours. Using a second battery, called a “slice”, that docks with the underside of the notebook, this long life can be expanded to an incredible 30 hours. Even using the eWEEK Europe reality check method of halving the stated battery life, the figures are still impressive.



The Lenovo nine-cell battery slice is an optional extra and adds to the weight and thickness to the slimline laptop. Greater Hp dv6700 power still carries a price.



The almost simultaneous arrival of competitors from HP and Dell is hardly surprising because all three companies had to stall their launches when a flaw was discovered in a companion chipset for the second generation Core processors. Some already-released models had to be recalled.

This time around, Dell looks determined not to be caught out again and has not specified battery life for its Sandy Bridge-based XPS 15 and 17 models. Assuming that battery life for the new range is better than the Latitude’s former 19 hours, the estimated life for the high end model in the XPS 17 range – which features a 3D screen – could hold a lesson.



The XPS 17, supplied with 3D glasses, has a battery life of just over five hours, despite a nine-cell Acer aspire 6935g 1500 battery. Dell does not specify if this is native or with a slice in place but, assuming it is without, ten hours of use seems rather a large drop from over 19 hours – perhaps this reduction is the price to be paid for 3D screens.



HP seems ready if Dell does release battery performance details. It has just released the Elitebook 8460p and 8560p. The 8560p can be fitted with the HP Ultracapacity Notebook Battery to give 32 hours of mains-free time.

Sony is taking the bespoke route with its Vaio S series using 2^nd Gen Core processors. Because the notebooks are available in various configurations, battery life has not been specified. “There are many different types of degradation that happen, and fixing this degradation could help us make longer-lasting batteries,” said Scott White, a materials engineer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who reported the details of the battery February 20 at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.



One site of damage is the anode, a battery’s negatively charged terminal. As a battery charges and discharges, the anode swells and shrinks. Over time, this cycling causes damage, creating cracks that can interfere with the flow of current and, ultimately, kill the battery Dell inspiron 6400 battery .



To counteract this cracking, White embedded tiny microspheres inside the graphite of an anode. As cracks formed in the anode, they tore open the plastic shells, releasing the contents within: a material called indium gallium arsenide.
